Case Study - Social Housing Organisation, New Zealand

THE WATER CHALLENGE

A client with a national housing portfolio had many homes situated in rural or remote areas of New Zealand, where town water supply is not accessible. As a result, they depend on private sources such as rainwater tanks, bores, or wells. While these sources can be practical, the quality and treatment of the water varied greatly across the properties.

THE CUSTOMER

This national housing provider manages a large and diverse portfolio of homes across New Zealand, including in isolated rural regions.

Their passionate commitment to tenant wellbeing meant ensuring each property had safe, reliable drinking water, regardless of its location. However, the diverse range of water supplies, infrastructure and treatment systems posed a challenge in meeting this standard. The client needed a national provider who could provide the assurance of a complete end-to-end package for drinking water safety.

THE SOLUTION

After a thorough competitive process, Puretec was selected to manage the water quality improvement programme across the portfolio.

This began with site visits to hundreds of properties nationwide. Each visit included water sampling for accredited lab testing, review of the water supply, assessment of existing infrastructure, and a tailored report with clear recommendations for required upgrades.

Where any necessary upgrades were approved, Puretec worked closely with tenants to carry out improvements. The scope ranged from installing a domestic water treatment system, to adding new tanks, sheds and developing new or improved water supplies. In some cases, bespoke solutions were required to meet site-specific needs.

Post-installation, each site received a final report including post-treatment test results, as-built documentation and a maintenance schedule to ensure ongoing water quality

HYBRID-G9 Filtration and UV System.

This dual-stage system was the primary filtration solution for most applications. The system combines sediment filtration with ultraviolet sterilisation, to reduce fine particles and reduce up to 99.99% of bacteria and parasites. Suitable for medium to large households, the HYBRID-G9 features a weather-protected outdoor casing and lockable lid for security and durability.

Stage 1: Coarse Sediment Filtration.

A PL Series 20 micron washable pleated cartridge to maximise sediment and dirt-holding capacity.

Stage 2: Additional Sediment Filtration

A PX Series 1 micron polyspun cartridge to reduce fine sand, silt and algae.

Stage 3: UV Sterilisation.

Radfire™ technology provides chemical-free, eco-friendly disinfection, effectively reducing up to 99.9% of bacteria.

NTS4000 pH Neutraliser.

Puretec primarily used this system across multiple sites to additionally correct water supply pH levels. The NTS4000 helps to prevent corrosion throughout the plumbing system, while utilising natural calcium carbonate media to raise low pH (acidic) water. This reduces the risk of damage to pipework, fixtures, and seals.

HYBRID-G13 Filtration and UV System.

Used in some specific installations requiring greater contaminant reduction or capacity, the HYBRID-G13 includes an additional filtration stage compared to the G9. The system is designed for medium to large applications and performs across both rainwater and mains supply. The system reduces sediment, organics, bad taste, and odour, while also providing highly effective disinfection of bacteria and parasites

Stage 1: Coarse Sediment Filtration.

A PL Series 5 micron washable pleated cartridge to maximise sediment and dirt-holdingcapacity.

Stage 2: Taste & Odour Reduction.

A CB Series 5 micron carbon block cartridge to reduce leaf tannins, odours, and chemical residues.

Stage 3: Fine Sediment Filtration

A PX Series 1 micron polyspun cartridge to reduce fine sand, silt and algae.

Stage 4: UV Sterilisation.

Radfire™ technology provides chemical-free, eco-friendly disinfection, effectively reducing up to 99.9% of bacteria.

RI-EPAS-4K Endpoint Acceptable Solution.

Where required to meet the New Zealand Water Services Act (2021), the RI-EPAS-4K was also used as an ultraviolet wall mounted endpoint solution. The system includes a UV steriliser, pre-assembled mounting and plumbing components, and integrated valves for simplified installation. Designed for compliance and reliability, this unit ensures safe water at the point of use.

ONGOING MAINTENANCE

By standardising treatment systems across the portfolio, Puretec made long-term servicing more efficient and cost-effective. Systems were also correctly sized to reduce the frequency of maintenance, an essential consideration for remote and hard to reach locations.

THE RESULT

Puretec rapidly delivered a best-practice, scalable solution that gave the housing provider insight into their drinking water supplies and peace of mind across their rural properties. The programme provided consistent water quality, reduced risk, and lower long-term operating costs, all while supporting the health and safety of residents.
